I love how it is zero fun -- no big stars, no romance, just brutality and hopelessness. Be still, my beating heart!!

Aniara - I didn't LOVE it, but it was really good and hopeless, and you're the only other person I know of who has seen it so I think it's underappreciated.

Lockdown Tower - never heard of it, I'll give it a try.

Last Night - hmmm. There are some elements here I like but I don't know if it's bleak enough for me.

Testament and Virus - I like the look of both of these!

On the Beach - I saw the original and quite liked it. Never heard of the miniseries, just watched a trailer and nope, looks too kitschy for me.

Bronx Warriors, Doomsday, and Prophecies... - all too wacky for me but they would be fun group watches.

Thanks again for these, I'm excited to check some of them out!danihttps://crimsonhighway.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1003758772971289930.post-54881097477562725192024-03-25T21:08:14.168-04:002024-03-25T21:08:14.168-04:00Oh boy, I could go on forever about apocalypses! I've been obsessed ever since I stumbled upon The Day After as a very impressionable teenager.

So let's see, let me try to group some things out:
Devastating & Horrific: Threads (should be findable now on Shudder - IT WILL DESTROY YOU). Two recent films that fit this mold even though they're not EXACTLY apocalypse movies: Aniara (set on a spaceship) and Lockdown Tower

Beautifully Human Stuff: Last Night (1998, one of my all-time faves), Testament

For broader political stories, Virus (1980), On the Beach (both the '50s adaptation and made-for-TV '90s miniseries are good in very different ways)

Wacky: 1990: The Bronx Warriors, Tosio Masuda's 1974 epic oddity The Prophecies of Nostradamus, Neil Marshall's Doomsday

Hope these help to start!

deadlydollshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06061028044836745499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1003758772971289930.post-4784315520536422802024-03-25T18:10:32.453-04:002024-03-25T18:10:32.453-04:00Ok I lol'd at your review ("Last Sentinel...Ok I lol'd at your review ("Last Sentinel is, to put it mildly, a very slow film. A nice way of saying this is to call it patient. A more straightforward adjective would be boring." -- love it) but I also love a lot of slow films, and I'm a sucker for apocalyptic stuff, so this sounds right up my alley! Adding it to my list now.

Just curious, what are some of your fave apocalypse films? This sounds fascinating, although tbh it also sounds like you had the reaction I have to a fair amount of Soviet-bloc horror--intrigued, confused, definitely missing some of what's going on here, but willing to go on the ride. Lots of fun, and good self-awareness in the comedy. And not super preachy -- that's a hard balance to achieve I think, having a message but not beating the audience over the head with it, and I thought Slotherhouse found that balance pretty well. My only complaints were that the Zenny character was grating and poorly played, and the last 20 minutes dragged on with all the "sloth just won't die" stuff. I loved the soundtrack though, lots of shockingly well-written pop/rock/punk songs about Alpha, I was genuinely impressed by that detail.flanhttps://crimsonhighway.wordpress.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1003758772971289930.post-37885323709198257632024-02-27T21:12:16.535-05:002024-02-27T21:12:16.535-05:00Yes! I looked it up and both movies seem to be available on the Criterion Channel (I don't have a subscription) but both have Panic in the title:) Also, speaking of sexy young Jack Palance (hubba hubba) I recommend the movies Sudden Fear (with Joan Crawford), Man in the Attic and I Died a Thousand Times (with Shelley Winters) which is a remake of High Sierra, I like both versions BTW. All I REALLY remember from it is sexy young Jack Palance and the trivia that he apparently had to do his own stunts because he was more capable than his stunt man. I'm also a fan of nuclear apocalypse/post apocalyptic movies so I am wondering if you have seen Panic in the Year Zero? I think it's fairly well done with an interesting cast (Ray Milland, Frankie Avalon, Jean Hagen and Joan Freeman)--I enjoyed it! Check it out if you haven't already. Oddly enough, that didn't bother me too much because its tone and vibe were so immediately clear. I haven't seen Beyond the Black Rainbow in years so I wonder if my thoughts on it would be different today, but I remember my immediate reaction was, "this is cool but not for me." I think with Come True, I go into it being so aware that I KNOW it won't be for me, which lowers my defenses and opens me up to it, if that makes sense. deadlydollshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06061028044836745499noreply@blogger.com
